A sustainable and inclusive school

We regularly audit our operations to make sure we’re on track to meet both our statutory obligations and our own sustainability targets. Since 2011, we have had a Carbon Management Plan January 2025 in place that records, plans for, and measures our progress. The things we’ve done to help meet this target include reducing and changing the packaging at our food outlets to recyclable packaging, reducing our water consumption and the amount of waste we send to landfill, as well as prioritising local and regional suppliers.
In 2009, we partnered with Lexington Catering to oversee all our retail and hospitality catering. Sustainability is a key condition of our partnership, and Lexington make sustainability a priority in everything they do. For example, they have partnered with Change Please, a social enterprise coffee supplier where 100% of profits go towards providing employment and training opportunities for those experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity; Lexington has a talent school, which delivers in-house training and career opportunities; in 2018, LBS and Lexington committed to providing no single use plastics on our campus — the utensils and cups you see now are made from biodegradable and compostable bioplastics.
Since 2012, we have reduced our overall waste by 124.4 tonnes and increased our overall recycling by 14.2%. Since 2015, we have segregated our residual and food waste, so our food waste is now composted and our residual waste is incinerated (rather than landfilled).
We’ve improved our energy efficiency in many ways, including by, installing motion sensors to control lighting, increasing our use of LED lighting, installing voltage optimisation units, installing daylight sensors to turn lighting off when not needed, and using automatic tracking systems that allow us to see where energy savings could be made. We now operate two electric vehicles, moving away from diesel transport in 2017.
We’ve been working with our suppliers to help make our branded merchandise more sustainable, including sourcing more of our products from UK-based suppliers and coordinating School-wide orders to reduce shipment and storage.
